DORAL, Fla. — House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declined Tuesday to directly condemn Republican lawmakers who made anti-Muslim remarks, saying he had instead spoken with them about their “tone.” The comments came during a press conference at the House GOP retreat in Doral, Florida.

Democrats and religious tolerance advocates criticized statements by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.), which they described as Islamophobic. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) called on Johnson to discipline Fine, who recently posted controversial comments about Muslims on social media.

Johnson said he had addressed the issue privately. “I’ve spoken to those members and all members, as I always do, about our tone and our message and what we say,” he told reporters.

He added that some Americans are concerned about the potential influence of Islamic law in the United States, though he did not cite specific examples. “The language that people use, it’s different language than I would use. But I think that’s a serious issue,” Johnson said.

Ogles recently posted on social media that “Muslims don’t belong in American society” and called for the deportation of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a naturalized U.S. citizen. Jeffries responded by criticizing the remarks and urging House leadership to take disciplinary action.
