Author Michael Wolff has filed a lawsuit in New York Supreme Court against First Lady Melania Trump, alleging she threatened to sue him for over $1 billion if he did not retract remarks connecting her to financier Jeffrey Epstein. Wolff claims the lawsuit aims to defend his First Amendment rights and expose what he describes as a pattern by the Trumps of using lawsuits to “intimidate their critics.”
According to the filing, Wolff seeks to compel both Melania and Donald Trump to testify under oath about their relationships and interactions with Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while facing sex-trafficking charges. Melania Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, previously demanded a retraction and apology by October 15, citing “reputational and financial harm.”
A spokesperson for the First Lady said she would “continue standing up to those who spread malicious falsehoods.” Wolff’s suit argues that his statements to The Daily Beast and in social media videos were either opinion, taken out of context, or protected speech. Legal analysts say the case could have far-reaching implications for press freedom and defamation law involving public figures.
