Meta revealed that Iranian hackers attempted to target members of both the Biden and Trump administrations, as well as other political figures, through a “small cluster of likely social engineering activity” on WhatsApp. Meta’s security team blocked the activity after user reports.
The malicious activity, originating in Iran, aimed to infiltrate political and diplomatic officials in the U.S., U.K., Israel, Palestine, and Iran. This included individuals connected to the Biden and Trump administrations.
Earlier this month, the Trump campaign reported being hacked by Iran, a claim confirmed by the FBI and other intelligence agencies. The hackers used phishing tactics, posing as technical support for major platforms like AOL, Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft, in an attempt to steal credentials.
Meta emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising public figures to use privacy settings, avoid engaging with unknown messages, and report suspicious activity.
