Meta has announced plans to remove heightened suspension penalties from Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, which were initially imposed following the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump, who was banned and later reinstated on Meta’s platforms as well as X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, remains primarily active on Truth Social, the platform he founded.
Trump’s social media accounts are now back to their pre-Capitol riot status. Meta’s decision removes the heightened penalties that could have led to automatic re-suspension for rule violations. Initially, Meta banned Trump for his praise of those involved in the Capitol violence, reinstating his accounts in January 2023 with strict conditions.
Meta stated the reversal was due to its responsibility to facilitate political expression ahead of the upcoming presidential nominations. The restrictions were deemed a response to extraordinary circumstances, which were no longer necessary as Trump had not violated platform terms since his reinstatement.
This decision comes after Trump threatened Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg with prison time if re-elected, intensifying their public feud. Meta, the last major platform to lift these restrictions, reinstated Trump’s accounts following similar actions by X and YouTube.
Despite regaining access to his mainstream social media accounts, Trump continues to favor Truth Social. Launched in February 2022, Truth Social became Trump’s primary platform but has faced financial difficulties and significant losses following SEC disclosures.
