Tech giant Meta admitted to mistakenly applying a fact-check warning to a photo from the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The warning, intended for an altered image showing Secret Service agents smiling, was incorrectly applied to the original image of Trump raising his fist after being grazed by a bullet at a Butler, PA rally.

Facebook spokesperson Dani Lever confirmed the mistake via X, explaining that the error stemmed from their AI system. “This fact check was initially applied to a doctored photo… our systems incorrectly applied that fact check to the real photo,” Lever stated. Meta has since corrected the error and apologized.

Meta relies on a third-party fact-checking system to avoid making determinations on truth themselves. This system helps identify misinformation and reduces the distribution of false claims using AI.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Trump’s reaction to the shooting as “bada–,” expressing personal admiration for Trump’s resilience and noting the emotional impact of the event.
