The U.S. has reported more than 1,000 measles cases this year, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), marking the deadliest outbreak in years. As of May 15, a total of 1,024 cases were confirmed across 31 states.

The CDC reports that 96% of individuals infected were either unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status. Thirteen percent of patients have required hospitalization, and three measles-related deaths have occurred so far in 2025.

Texas leads the nation with 718 cases — nearly 70% of all infections — as the outbreak continues to expand. Other affected states include California, Florida, Ohio, New York, and Virginia.

Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, meaning sustained transmission had been stopped. However, if the outbreak persists beyond one year, that designation may be revoked.

Health officials are urging vaccinations to prevent further spread, especially among children and vulnerable populations.
