Education Secretary Linda McMahon informed Harvard University Monday that it will no longer be eligible for new federal research grants, escalating tensions between the Ivy League school and the Trump administration. A senior Education Department official said the ban will remain until Harvard proves it can “demonstrate responsible management.”

The administration cited four key issues: antisemitism, alleged race-based discrimination at the Harvard Law Review, a perceived decline in academic rigor, and insufficient viewpoint diversity. The freeze does not affect federal student aid but applies strictly to new research funding.

The move follows several federal investigations into Harvard’s foreign donations and admissions policies. One case reportedly involves a Law Review editor claiming an article warranted expedited review based on the author’s race. Trump has also called for the school’s tax-exempt status to be revoked and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has threatened to revoke its ability to admit foreign students.

This latest action comes after Harvard sued the Trump administration over a $2 billion federal funding pause tied to its refusal to dismantle diversity and inclusion programs.
