Former Rep. Matt Gaetz announced Thursday that he would no longer seek the role of Attorney General in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, citing concerns over becoming a “distraction” during the transition.

Gaetz shared on X that, despite strong support, his confirmation was turning into an unnecessary obstacle. He emphasized the importance of having Trump’s Justice Department ready to function from “Day 1.”

President-elect Trump praised Gaetz’s efforts on TruthSocial, acknowledging his strong performance during the confirmation process and expressing confidence in Gaetz’s future.

Gaetz’s nomination faced significant challenges due to previous allegations of sex trafficking and misconduct, which he has denied. The Justice Department ultimately did not file charges, but the nomination revived scrutiny of his past, including a House Ethics Committee investigation that concluded when Gaetz resigned from Congress last week.

The Ethics Committee had been considering releasing its findings but postponed a decision. Meanwhile, senators, including Joni Ernst and John Cornyn, acknowledged discussing the allegations with Gaetz during confirmation-related meetings, with Ernst noting Gaetz addressed the accusations directly.

Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance continued advocating for Gaetz, though skepticism among senators raised doubts about his confirmation prospects. Gaetz’s withdrawal leaves questions about his political future and the fate of his congressional seat.
