Former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) suggested he may run for Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) Senate seat, expected to be vacated if Rubio is confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State. Speaking at Turning Point USA’s AmFest in Arizona, Gaetz noted he’s considering several political options after resigning from the House, following a failed nomination for attorney general and an impending House Ethics report on misconduct allegations.
Gaetz mentioned possible bids for Florida governor in 2026 or taking on insider trading investigations, but focused on Rubio’s Senate seat, stating, “Maybe I’ll just run for Marco Rubio’s vacant seat.”

DeSantis also set dates for the special election to fill Gaetz’s House seat, with a primary in January and the general election on April 1.
