WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) was sworn in Tuesday as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security after being confirmed by the Senate and selected by President Donald Trump to lead the agency.
Attorney General Pam Bondi administered the oath during a ceremony at the White House, where Trump praised Mullin as a “great American patriot” and highlighted his years in Congress and work on border security and immigration enforcement. The Senate confirmed Mullin in a 54-45 vote, with two Democrats joining Republicans in support.
Mullin, a member of the Cherokee Nation, becomes the first Cherokee Nation citizen to serve in a Cabinet position. In remarks following the ceremony, he said his role would be to protect all Americans regardless of political affiliation.
Trump said Mullin would continue the administration’s focus on immigration enforcement and border security, including ongoing deportation efforts.
Mullin replaces former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who departed earlier this month following scrutiny over a federal advertising campaign and broader concerns raised during congressional hearings.
