ATLANTA, Ga., Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is making a final push to reshape House GOP leadership before her upcoming resignation, quietly seeking nine Republican signatures needed to trigger a motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson. Greene has been approaching colleagues in recent days to gauge support, despite widespread expectations that any effort to remove Johnson would fail under tightened House rules.
The far-right Georgia lawmaker has feuded publicly with GOP leadership throughout her tenure and recently deepened her rift with Donald Trump, who called her a “traitor” following her criticism of his immigration policies during a “60 Minutes” interview. Greene has framed her latest effort as defending “America First,” but party insiders say her influence has waned, and frustration among Republicans has grown over her attacks on colleagues.
House rules adopted after the 2023 ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy now require nine Republicans to initiate a vacate vote, making spontaneous rebellions far less likely. Greene previously attempted to remove Johnson in 2024 after he supported a bipartisan deal to avoid a government shutdown.
In a video announcing her resignation, effective January 5, Greene said GOP leadership has sidelined rank-and-file lawmakers, claiming her bills “collect dust” without receiving floor votes. She has also accused Johnson of dismissing Republican women within the conference, criticism his office has not addressed. Whether Greene secures the necessary signatures remains unclear.
