Tyler Bradley Dykes, a former active-duty Marine, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Dykes, 26, of South Carolina, grabbed a police riot shield and used it to push through police lines during the attack. He also apparently flashed a Nazi salute outside the building. Dykes pleaded guilty to assault charges and has a prior conviction from the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell imposed the sentence, aligning closely with federal prosecutors’ recommendation. Dykes’ attorneys had sought a two-year sentence, citing his regret and acceptance of responsibility.
On January 6, Dykes traveled to Washington, D.C., for the “Stop the Steal” rally and participated in breaching police defenses. Prosecutors noted he contributed to severe violence at the Capitol. Despite denying performing a Nazi salute, prosecutors presented video evidence of his open-handed gesture.
Previously, Dykes was arrested for participating in the Unite the Right rally, where he was photographed making a Nazi salute. He was discharged from the Marines under “other than honorable” conditions in May 2023.
Dykes’ sentencing is part of the ongoing prosecution of over 1,400 individuals involved in the Capitol riot, with more than 900 sentenced to varying prison terms.
