Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday that he is now acting director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) following reports of federal changes and a potential shutdown.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen raised concerns in a letter to the administration, questioning whether individuals from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) who accessed USAID’s classified spaces had proper security clearances. A DOGE spokeswoman insisted that no classified material was improperly accessed.
DOGE, created by former President Trump and led by Elon Musk, aims to reduce federal spending. Musk has called for USAID’s shutdown, labeling it a “criminal organization.”
A source told Scripps News that USAID employees in Washington, D.C., were instructed Sunday night to work remotely, with some locked out of accounts. Democratic senators argue the administration lacks the authority to dismantle USAID without congressional approval.
