The Senate confirmed former Senator Marco Rubio as the U.S. secretary of state in a unanimous 99-0 vote, just hours after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Rubio, 53, once a rival to Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries, has since become a key ally. Trump praised Rubio as “a true friend to our Allies and a fearless Warrior.”
As secretary of state, Rubio will oversee U.S. foreign policy and negotiate international agreements. During confirmation hearings, he addressed key issues such as U.S. support for Ukraine and strategies to manage relations with China, Russia, and North Korea, emphasizing the need for balance in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Separately, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s nomination to lead the Department of Homeland Security advanced out of the Senate Homeland Security Committee with bipartisan support in a 13-2 vote. Noem, who served in Congress for eight years before becoming governor, emphasized a commitment to securing U.S. borders and creating a fair immigration system. If confirmed, she will oversee immigration enforcement and other key security measures, including Trump’s promised mass deportation initiative.
