A 21-year-old Virginia man was arrested Saturday after allegedly driving an SUV through a dispersing crowd at a “No Kings” anti-Trump protest in Culpeper.
According to the Culpeper Police Department, Joseph R. Checklick “intentionally accelerated his vehicle into the dispersing crowd, striking at least one person.” Officers quickly stopped the vehicle and arrested Checklick, who now faces charges of reckless driving. He was held without bond at the Culpeper County Jail.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The incident occurred the same day as politically charged violence nationwide. In Minnesota, Democratic House Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot, and Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were critically wounded in separate targeted attacks. In Texas, threats against state lawmakers attending Austin’s “No Kings” protest prompted the temporary evacuation of the state capitol and led to an arrest by the Department of Public Safety.
The “No Kings” demonstrations spanned over 2,000 U.S. cities, opposing the Trump administration’s policies and coinciding with a controversial military parade in Washington, D.C.
