New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has stirred up significant discussion with his bold pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he wins the election. Mamdani cites the International Criminal Court’s active warrant against Netanyahu as the basis for this promise, emphasizing that New York “must comply with international criminal law.” Despite facing a wave of criticism from both sides of the political aisle, he remains firm in his commitment.

Among those voicing concern is Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), who argues that New York lacks the jurisdiction to arrest Netanyahu. On the other side, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) went further, labeling Mamdani as “an antisemite and a communist,” and has even introduced legislation aimed at preventing local enforcement of ICC warrants.

Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has long been in the spotlight for his support of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and his outspoken views on Israel. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the arrest proposal, calling it “political theater,” while Netanyahu dismissed it as “folly.” Adding to the complexity, President Donald Trump has pledged to step in if there’s any serious attempt to detain Netanyahu in the U.S., further intensifying the political debate surrounding this issue.
