Most independents say former President Trump received a fair trial in the New York hush money case, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted after his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. The poll, published Sunday, shows 54% of independents believe Trump got a fair trial, while 46% disagree.
Overall, 56% of U.S. adults think the trial was fair, while 44% do not. Regarding the verdict, 57% of U.S. adults and 56% of independents believe the jury reached the right decision, while 43% and 44% respectively say the verdict was wrong.
Responses show a significant partisan divide. Nearly all Democrats (96%) believe Trump received a fair trial and that the jury’s verdict was correct. In contrast, 86% of Republicans view the trial as unfair, and 82% believe the verdict was wrong.
The poll comes amid Republican leaders criticizing the trial as unfair and politically motivated, reflecting Trump’s harsh statements about the trial and Judge Juan Merchan. Trump called the judge “the devil” and labeled the trial a “scam.”
The survey, conducted from May 30 to June 1, included 989 U.S. adults with a margin of error of ±5.2 percentage points.
