A new Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll reveals that 56% of Democrats support President Biden withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns about his mental acuity and ability to serve another term. Overall, 67% of respondents believe Biden should step aside following his poor debate performance against Donald Trump last month, which raised alarm bells among Democrats.

Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) has become the first sitting Democrat in the Senate to call for Biden’s withdrawal, joining several House colleagues. Welch emphasized the need for Biden to reassess his candidacy in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

The poll indicates Biden and Trump are nearly tied in the popular vote, with each receiving around 46% support among registered voters. Additionally, 46% of respondents viewed Trump as the debate winner, while only 7% favored Biden. Half of the respondents reported a less favorable view of Biden post-debate.

Concerns about age are prevalent, with 85% of respondents deeming Biden too old for another term, compared to 60% for Trump. Despite these concerns, Biden remains resolute, stating in an ABC News interview that he has no plans to exit the race.

The survey, conducted from July 5-9, included 2,431 participants and had a margin of error of 2 percentage points. Among the 825 registered Democrats surveyed, the margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.
