More than half of President Biden’s supporters are backing him primarily to oppose former President Trump, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday. The poll shows that 54% of likely Biden voters are driven by opposition to Trump, a 7-point increase since March. In contrast, only 27% support Biden because they like him, a decrease of 4 points from March. Additionally, 19% support Biden because he is the presumptive Democratic nominee.

The poll highlights that voters’ framing of the election as either a referendum or a choice significantly influences their decision. Among those viewing the election as a judgement on Trump, 66% support Biden, while 34% back Trump. Conversely, among those viewing it as a judgement on Biden, 66% favor Trump, compared to 34% for Biden. When the election is seen as a direct comparison between the two candidates, Trump leads slightly with 53% support, while Biden has 47%.

Nationally, the poll finds Biden and Trump nearly tied among likely voters, with Trump at 50% and Biden at 49%. In battleground states, Biden has a narrow edge with 50% support, compared to Trump’s 49%.

Both candidates have secured enough delegates to be considered their parties’ presumptive nominees and will be officially nominated at their respective conventions this summer.

The poll surveyed 2,063 U.S. adult residents from June 5 to 7, with an oversample in key battleground states. The margin of error is 3.2 percentage points among all adults and 3.8 points among registered voters.
