As the 2024 presidential election approaches, a Pew Research survey found that 63% of Americans support replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote to determine the presidency. In contrast, 35% prefer keeping the current system. The survey, conducted from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, 2024, included 9,720 U.S. adults.
Partisan divisions remain stark: 80% of Democrats favor moving to a popular vote system, while Republicans are split, with 53% supporting the Electoral College. This debate gained prominence after the 2000 and 2016 elections, where the popular vote winners lost due to the Electoral College.
In most states, the candidate with the most votes wins all electoral votes, except for Nebraska and Maine, which allocate votes by district. Efforts to change Nebraska’s rules could potentially favor Donald Trump in a tight election.
