The assassination of Charlie Kirk has intensified rhetoric across the MAGA movement, where leaders cast his death as evidence of a political “war” against conservatives.

Within hours of the shooting at Utah Valley University, Donald Trump called Kirk a “martyr for truth and freedom,” blaming the “radical left” for fueling violence. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon said on his “War Room” podcast, “They are at war with us. Whether we want to accept it or not, they are at war with us.” Fox News host Jesse Watters echoed the sentiment, asking viewers, “What are we gonna do about it?”

On X, influencers like Matt Walsh described Kirk’s death as part of an “existential fight,” citing attacks on churches, Trump, and conservatives as proof of escalating threats. Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI) pledged to “go to war” against “leftist scumbags,” while former White House aide Stephen Miller labeled Democrats a “domestic extremist organization.”

Experts cautioned that such rhetoric could deepen cycles of violence. Mike Jensen of the University of Maryland’s START program told Axios that escalation is “the pathway that we’re on,” urging bipartisan support for prevention programs at the Department of Homeland Security.

Some conservatives urged restraint. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) criticized commentators for exploiting the tragedy, while Ben Shapiro emphasized the need for a “better America” where debate replaces violence.
