MAGA activists, backed by President Donald Trump’s administration and Elon Musk, have launched an aggressive campaign against two of America’s oldest civil rights watchdogs — the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) — accusing them of unfairly labeling conservatives as extremists.

FBI Director Kash Patel officially cut ties with both groups this week, ending decades of collaboration on hate-crime tracking and counter-extremism training. The move followed right-wing outrage over ADL and SPLC pages referencing Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA in their hate group resources. Both watchdogs said their reports predated Kirk’s assassination, which they condemned.

Under pressure, the ADL removed its “Glossary of Extremism,” citing misuse of its material, while the SPLC kept its pages up, reaffirming its commitment to “exposing hate and extremism.” MAGA figures like Andrew Kolvet, Kirk’s spokesman, and podcaster Jack Posobiec called the groups “tools of the radical left,” claiming they fuel political violence against conservatives. Musk also accused both organizations of being “evil” and complicit in inciting violence.

Analysts note the backlash comes as hate crimes reach record highs, with FBI data showing most attacks motivated by race or religion. Despite this, MAGA activists are pressuring major platforms like PayPal and Google to sever ties with the groups.
