Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) has formally requested that the Trump administration deploy up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the state, citing the need to strengthen law enforcement efforts against violent crime.

In a press release, Landry said Louisiana has made progress in reducing crime but still faces challenges. “This mission is about saving lives and protecting families,” he wrote. “To the criminals terrorizing our communities: your time is up. Law and order are back in Louisiana.”

The request follows similar Trump-era deployments of Guard troops in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Portland — moves that drew sharp criticism from local officials. Oregon leaders are currently suing to block the federal activation of their Guard troops.

In a separate statement, Landry issued a warning to undocumented immigrants, highlighting the state’s “Louisiana Lockup” detention facility near the Mississippi River. “Gang members, rapists, drug dealers, and human smugglers have no place in this country,” he said.

The Defense Department has not yet confirmed whether the deployment will move forward.
