Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is under fire for her handling of wildfires that have devastated the region, killing at least 24 people. Critics cite her international travel during the crisis and previous budget cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) as key points of contention.

Bass’s trip to Ghana for a presidential inauguration, which coincided with the wildfires, has drawn backlash, especially as she previously vowed not to travel internationally while in office. Additionally, critics highlight a $17.6 million cut to the LAFD budget, though her allies argue these funds were later redirected to firefighter salaries and equipment upgrades.

Bass’s office defended her response, emphasizing her securing of resources and issuing an executive order to expedite rebuilding. However, political opponents, including former mayoral rival Rick Caruso, have leveraged the crisis to question her leadership, fueling a petition with over 134,000 signatures calling for her resignation.
