Libertarian Party Chair Steven Nekhaila is urging Elon Musk to back the party rather than launch a new “America Party,” as the billionaire has threatened to do if Donald Trump‘s “big, beautiful bill” becomes law.

“Making a new third party would be a mistake,” Nekhaila told Politico, emphasizing the Libertarian Party’s existing infrastructure and ballot access as major advantages. He added that with Musk’s financial backing, the party could dramatically scale up: “Once the capital is there, the doors get blown wide open.”

Musk soured on Trump after the spending bill, projected to add $4 trillion to the deficit, advanced in Congress. While the legislation eliminates EV tax credits that benefit Musk’s Tesla, the billionaire said his opposition stems from fiscal concerns, not personal profit.

Musk, who donated over $250 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign, has not responded to outreach from either the Libertarians or centrist group No Labels, both of which now seek his support.
