A coalition of over 100 lawmakers has called on President Biden to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would outlaw gender-based discrimination in the U.S. Constitution. In their letter, lawmakers emphasized the urgency of securing equality amid threats to reproductive freedom, healthcare access, and LGBTQIA+ rights.

Reps. Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley, leaders of the Congressional Caucus for the ERA, highlighted the importance of codifying equal rights, citing state abortion bans and barriers to gender-affirming care as critical concerns. They framed ratifying the ERA as a significant legacy for Biden, stating it would “stand as a defining achievement” of his presidency.

The ERA, passed by Congress in the 1970s, reached the required 38-state ratification threshold in 2020, but its recognition has faced legal and procedural challenges. While Biden expressed support for the ERA on Women’s Equality Day in 2023, advocates now urge him to finalize its certification, asserting that the move would reaffirm America’s commitment to equality for all.
