Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was swiftly eliminated from the Libertarian Party’s nomination on the first ballot, receiving support from only 19 delegates, or about 2% of the vote. His nomination was met with disapproval from the crowd.
Kennedy used his speech to criticize former President Trump’s handling of lockdowns and social distancing mandates during his presidency. Trump, who also addressed the convention, fared worse in the nomination process, receiving only two write-in votes. He was deemed ineligible for not filing the correct paperwork, forcing him into a write-in campaign.
In a jab at Trump, one delegate wrote in Stormy Daniels, who is central to a criminal trial against Trump. Kennedy, seen as a long-shot contender against Trump and President Biden, has positioned himself as an anti-establishment figure and has garnered about 8% support in recent polls. Despite being a distant third, he could potentially impact the election outcome.
