Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign recently ended a contract with a vendor responsible for sending a fundraising email that sympathetically referred to individuals charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection as “activists” who were “stripped of their constitutional liberties.” The campaign blamed the vendor for the error, stating that the language used did not reflect Kennedy’s views.

The email’s language mirrored former President Donald Trump’s efforts to recast the violent Capitol attack as lawmakers were certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. Trump has promised to pardon the rioters and has made the attack a key part of his campaign.

The fundraising email, which called for the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, was sent with the subject “We Must Free Assange!” Assange has been in custody in a high-security London prison since 2019, and the U.S. is seeking his extradition on charges related to his organization’s publication of classified documents.

Kennedy’s campaign declined to release the name of the contractor.
