Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive protection from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) following criticism from officers who were reassigned from crime prevention duties to her security detail. LAPD officers from the Metropolitan Division had been assisting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in protecting Harris after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service protection last week. The detail, consisting of about a dozen officers and funded by the city where Harris owns a home in Brentwood, has now been disbanded, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

The LAPD described the protection as a “temporary coordinated effort” with CHP “until an alternate plan is established.” However, the move faced backlash from the LAPD’s largest police union, which criticized the detail’s formation by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass as “nuts.”

The Los Angeles Police Protective League stated, “Mayor Karen Bass should tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base, then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.” The union added that Harris “can easily afford to pay for her own security,” especially as she prepares for a 15-city book tour starting September 24, following the release of her book, 107 Days, on September 23.
