Kamala Harris has achieved a first for a Democratic opponent since Donald Trump entered the presidential race in 2015—she’s garnered more attention. According to Ipsos’ latest political tracking data, Harris has slightly edged ahead of Trump in recent polls, though their core prediction model still favors Trump, factoring in President Biden’s approval rating.
Ipsos’ Chris Jackson noted that while incumbent presidents have a “50/50” chance of reelection with low approval ratings, successors like Harris face tougher odds, with only one in eight succeeding under similar circumstances.
Despite this, Harris has temporarily eclipsed Trump in Google Search trends, a “rare feat,” Jackson said, considering Trump’s longstanding dominance in media attention. National polling shows Harris with a slight lead, particularly in key swing states. However, in a poll question associating candidates with the word “weird,” Trump was cited nearly two-to-one over Harris.
