Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Donald Trump as “cruel” during a rally in Atlanta for his comments about the family of Amber Thurman, a Georgia mother who died after waiting 20 hours for abortion-related care. Harris linked Thurman’s death to Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws, implemented after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, with support from Trump-appointed justices. Trump recently dismissed the Thurman family’s grief during a Fox News event, promising “better ratings.”
Harris emphasized restoring national abortion rights and used Thurman’s story in her campaign ads. At the rally, Thurman’s family was present, and Harris played a clip showing Trump making light of the family’s pain. She said Trump belittled their sorrow, prioritizing his ratings.
Harris aims to energize voters on reproductive rights, drawing large crowds and leveraging star power with appearances by Usher in Atlanta and Lizzo in Detroit. Early voting in Georgia is underway, and Harris referenced former President Jimmy Carter casting his vote by mail, encouraging others to do the same.
