Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday she will not enter the 2026 race for California governor, ending speculation about a political comeback following her 2024 presidential loss.
In a statement posted to X, Harris said, “After deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for governor in this election. For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office.”
The announcement comes as Gov. Gavin Newsom nears the end of his final term. Harris, a Bay Area native, was seen as a leading contender had she entered the race.
Harris suggested Democrats must move beyond the strategies that led to their 2024 defeat, stating the country is in a “moment of crisis” and that institutions have “too often failed the American people.” She emphasized staying true to Democratic values while adapting the party’s political approach.
While ruling out a gubernatorial run, Harris hinted at continuing involvement in national politics, saying she would support Democratic candidates and reveal more about her own plans in the months ahead.
