Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was notably absent from the court on Monday, with no given explanation for his absence. The 75-year-old justice was also not participating remotely in arguments, a practice sometimes adopted by justices when they are unable to be present in person.

Chief Justice John Roberts announced Thomas’ absence, assuring that Thomas would still contribute to the day’s cases based on the briefs and transcripts of the arguments. The court occasionally announces when a justice is out due to illness, but did not do so in this case.

Two years ago, Thomas was hospitalized due to an infection, which led him to miss several court sessions, although he still participated in the cases during that time.

Justice Thomas, who joined the Supreme Court in 1991, is currently the longest-serving justice on the bench.
