A federal judge in Minnesota ruled Friday that MyPillow founder Mike Lindell defamed election technology company Smartmatic by repeatedly making false claims that its voting machines rigged the 2020 election.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Bryan found Lindell made at least 51 false statements, including in documentaries, interviews, and public appearances, alleging Smartmatic flipped votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden in Los Angeles County. The judge wrote, “no reasonable trier of fact could find that any of the statements at issue are true.”
However, the court deferred judgment on whether Lindell acted with “actual malice,” a requirement Smartmatic must prove to collect damages. Smartmatic’s attorney Erik Connolly said the company will pursue “nine-figure damages,” stressing that Lindell’s claims were “impossible” and “false.”
Smartmatic has previously settled with Newsmax and One America News and is still suing Fox News. Lindell, who already lost a separate Dominion Voting Systems defamation case this year, dismissed the ruling as “bizarre” and vowed to continue his campaign against voting machines.
He also hinted at a run for Minnesota governor against Democrat Tim Walz, while continuing to battle mounting financial and legal troubles tied to his election claims.
