U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta has ordered Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to stop his investigation of Media Matters following its critical report on ad placements on X, formerly Twitter. The injunction comes after a similar order Mehta issued against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who also attempted to investigate the watchdog group.
Mehta hasn’t provided a written opinion yet but previously indicated that Paxton’s investigation likely violated the First Amendment by trying to suppress Media Matters’ reporting. Both Paxton and Bailey initiated investigations around the time X sued Media Matters for allegedly “manipulating” its algorithms to show ads next to extremist content.
Mehta’s order prevents Bailey from issuing further subpoenas or taking action against Media Matters.
