Florida Judge Aileen Cannon approved the Justice Department’s release of the first volume of special counsel Jack Smith’s report, which details the investigation and charges against Donald Trump related to the 2020 presidential election.

Cannon denied a motion from Trump’s former co-defendants seeking to block the release. The DOJ had previously agreed to withhold the second volume, addressing Trump’s classified documents case, due to ongoing legal proceedings involving other defendants.

This report, an obligatory part of Smith’s role, could serve as prosecutors’ final explanation after federal cases against Trump were dropped following his 2024 election victory. Trump has contested the special counsel’s authority and argued that releasing the report could disrupt his White House transition.

Legal challenges may still arise, with potential appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent the release.
