Former national security adviser John Bolton pushed back on Tulsi Gabbard’s explosive claims against the Obama administration, arguing she has “imagined evidence that doesn’t exist” regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. Gabbard, now Director of National Intelligence, cited a newly declassified 2020 House report that questions how the CIA assessed Russia’s intent to help Donald Trump.

Speaking on NewsNation, Bolton said the report doesn’t justify any Department of Justice investigation. “If anybody really gets into it, it collapses quickly,” he said, while noting the release may have helped Gabbard politically.

The committee report criticized the CIA for basing key conclusions on a “scant” and “unclear” piece of intelligence. Gabbard has called the matter “the most egregious weaponization and politicization of intelligence in American history.” She also sent criminal referrals to the DOJ targeting Obama, James Clapper, John Brennan, and James Comey.

Trump backed the claims Tuesday, accusing Obama of treason. Still, Bolton said Gabbard’s efforts offer no “predicate for a legitimate criminal investigation” and emphasized that while prior reports critiqued intelligence assessments, they didn’t support criminal wrongdoing.
