Following the Republican National Convention, Ohio Senator JD Vance has emerged as the least-liked vice presidential candidate since 1980, with a net negative approval rating of minus six points, according to CNN. Historically, VP candidates see a significant post-convention ratings boost, averaging a net positive rating of 19 points since 2000.

Vance’s poor ratings continue a trend of underwhelming support. In the 2022 Ohio Senate race, Vance won against Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan by just six points, while Republican Governor Mike DeWine won by 25 points. This discrepancy has led some to question the strategic value of Vance’s selection as Donald Trump’s running mate, as it appears to appeal more to Trump’s base than swing voters.

The Harris campaign capitalized on Vance’s unpopularity, highlighting his support for a nationwide abortion ban and other policies. With President Joe Biden stepping down and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 race dynamics have shifted. Harris is more popular among young and minority voters, presenting an advantage for Democrats who need high turnout from these groups.

Trump’s campaign, which had focused on Biden, must now adjust its strategy to address Harris’s candidacy and potential post-nomination bump in approval ratings.
