Special Counsel Jack Smith’s final report, released Tuesday, asserts that his investigation into President-elect Trump was independent and free of political interference. Smith emphasized that the evidence gathered would have likely secured a conviction if the case had proceeded.
In the report, Smith defended his decision to prosecute Trump, rejecting claims of political bias, stating, “The ultimate decision to bring charges against Mr. Trump was mine. It is a decision I stand behind fully.”
The 174-page report details Trump’s efforts to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power, alleging he weaponized false election fraud claims. Smith maintained the admissible evidence met the standard for conviction but cited Trump’s reelection and immunity as reasons for dropping charges.
Despite Trump’s legal challenges, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon approved the report’s release. Smith’s prosecution faced unique challenges, including Trump’s influence over witnesses.
