Rebecca Lavrenz, a 72-year-old Colorado bed-and-breakfast operator known as the “J6 praying grandma,” was sentenced Monday to six months of home confinement for her involvement in the Capitol riot. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui also fined her $103,000, citing her public comments criticizing the justice system and profiting from her conviction.
Prosecutors sought a 10-month prison sentence, accusing Lavrenz of capitalizing on her misdemeanor conviction through media appearances and a crowdfunding campaign that raised over $230,000. Lavrenz, embraced by former President Donald Trump, has questioned the integrity of the Jan. 6 prosecutions.
Judge Faruqui emphasized the seriousness of her actions and ordered her to stay off the internet during her confinement. Lavrenz’s attorneys plan to appeal the conviction, arguing that the sentence stifles her free speech. Lavrenz claimed she participated in the Capitol riot “out of obedience to God” and denied any violent intentions.
