The Italian American Civil Rights League (IACRL) has urged Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to withdraw as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 presidential race. IACRL board member Mike Crispi labeled Walz “an enemy” of the Italian American community, citing his support for removing Christopher Columbus statues as evidence of his “racism.”

Crispi shared a statement on X, claiming that “private emails” from Walz’s staff reveal a strategy to “placate indigenous activists and other anti-Italian-American sympathizers.” The criticism follows 2020 protests in which a Columbus statue was toppled in front of the Minnesota State Capitol. Protesters, including Gabriel Black Elk, who is Lakota, were seen defacing the statue.

Crispi condemned Walz for allowing the vandalism and accused him of enabling “cultural Marxism” in Minnesota. The IACRL, which has endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election, is now calling for Walz to exit the race.
