WASHINGTON, D.C.Iran’s top security official publicly rejected claims of renewed diplomacy with the United States as military tensions intensified across the region following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, wrote on X on March 2, “We will not negotiate with the United States,” directly contradicting President Donald Trump’s statement that talks were imminent. Trump told reporters, “They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk, so I will be talking to them,” after a temporary Iranian leadership council led by President Masoud Pezeshkian assumed duties.

Larijani sharply criticized Trump, accusing him of plunging the region into chaos with “delusional fantasies” and expressing concern about further American casualties. “Today the Iranian nation is defending itself,” he wrote.

The diplomatic clash comes as U.S. air and naval operations tied to Israeli strikes continue. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine are scheduled to brief reporters Monday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe expected to join Tuesday. Three U.S. service members have been confirmed killed and five wounded in recent operations.

International bodies, including the United Nations and the World Health Organization, have called for de-escalation as civilian risks increase.
