Tehran, Iran — Iranian state media announced Sunday that an interim leadership council has been established following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Press TV reported that the interim body includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Guardian Council jurist Ayatollah Alireza Arafi and Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Eje’i. The council is expected to govern temporarily under constitutional provisions while Iran’s Assembly of Experts selects a permanent successor.
The 88-member Assembly of Experts is required under Iranian law to appoint a new supreme leader “as soon as possible,” according to reporting by The Associated Press. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989 and oversaw the country’s armed forces, judiciary and major state institutions.
President Donald Trump announced Saturday that Khamenei was killed in Israeli strikes conducted as part of a broader U.S.-Israel military campaign. Iranian state media later confirmed his death. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
The U.S. State Department urged Americans, particularly in the Middle East, to exercise increased caution and follow guidance from U.S. embassies and consulates as tensions remain high.
