Iowa’s new abortion law, which bans most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, took effect Monday. This significant change comes before many women even know they are pregnant. The push for this law gained traction after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, and the Iowa Supreme Court declared there was no constitutional right to abortion in the state.

Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds stated, “There is no right more sacred than life.” Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America called it a “historic day for Iowa.”

Abortion providers, like Planned Parenthood North Central States, are preparing to comply with the new law but describe it as a “devastating and dark” moment. The law’s restrictions will significantly impact Iowans, said Ruth Richardson of Planned Parenthood North Central States.

This law, along with other state restrictions, will be a critical issue in the 2024 elections. Democrats argue these laws are an attack on women’s rights, while Republicans celebrate their success in restricting abortions.

The law prohibits abortions after cardiac activity is detected, around six weeks, with exceptions for rape, incest, fetal abnormalities, or when the mother’s life is at risk. Previously, abortions were allowed up to 20 weeks.

Providers fear the law will worsen health inequalities for women of color and low-income residents. With varying restrictions nationwide, the primary options in restricted states include telehealth, underground networks, or traveling to states with fewer restrictions, increasing demand where access is more available.
