Washington, DC — Rep. Ilhan Omar says she plans to move out of her Washington home after federal agents searched it last week, saying the attention generated by the raid has left her feeling unsafe.
Federal authorities are investigating possible fraud involving immigration paperwork connected to Omar’s family. Grand jury subpoenas have also been issued to some relatives, according to a person briefed on the investigation.
Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen who arrived in the United States with her family at age 12, said she is confident she did nothing wrong. She became a citizen in 2000.
The Minnesota Democrat said Homeland Security investigators arrived around 6 a.m. and spent four to five hours searching the residence. Agents seized 17 items, including phones, notebooks, a Somali-language children’s book and a vintage camera.
The Justice Department has released few details beyond describing the matter as an ongoing criminal investigation.
The timing has drawn criticism from Democrats because the search occurred only weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms. Omar has frequently been targeted by President Donald Trump, while administration officials had publicly raised allegations about her immigration history before the search.
Omar described the agents themselves as “intrusive but polite” and said they documented what they removed and returned other items to their places.
No charges have been filed against Omar.
