The Trump administration is seeking private contractors to build and staff immigrant detention centers nationwide, signaling a major expansion of its deportation efforts.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a request for proposals last week asking companies to submit bids for new facilities, security, medical support, and related services totaling up to $45 billion over the next several years, according to the New York Times.

Though ICE’s current budget is about $10 billion, the administration is banking on future funding. Congress is weighing a $175 billion boost over the next decade to immigration enforcement committees, potentially allowing ICE to pursue the plan.

ICE facilities are already over capacity. While Congress funded beds for 41,500 people in 2024, the agency was detaining approximately 47,900 individuals by late March, according to its website.

The proposal aligns with Trump’s campaign promises to step up deportations and remove millions of undocumented immigrants.
