Gary Shapley, who in 2022 accused the Department of Justice of delaying its investigation into Hunter Biden, has been removed as acting director of the IRS after only two days in the position. Shapley was recently promoted to deputy chief of IRS criminal investigations and was named acting director shortly thereafter.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on X that Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender would now lead the agency. “Trust must be brought back to the IRS,” Bessent wrote, while adding that Shapley would remain a senior advisor during an ongoing year-long IRS reform investigation.

Fellow whistleblower Joseph Ziegler, who also raised concerns about the Hunter Biden probe, was promoted in March to senior advisor for IRS reform. Both men will return to senior roles once the investigation concludes, according to Bessent.

CBS News reported that Shapley’s removal followed Bessent’s complaints to President Trump about Shapley’s appointment, allegedly made at the request of Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk.
