The death of Alexei Navalny, a prominent critic of Putin, in an Arctic penal colony has sparked a public response across Russia, with many leaving tributes and participating in spontaneous rallies. Since the announcement of Navalny’s death on Friday, events have been held nationwide to honor the 47-year-old opposition leader.
In response, Russian authorities have detained at least 387 individuals in 39 cities, according to the Russia-based human rights monitoring group OVD-Info. This represents the largest wave of arrests related to political events since over 1,300 people were detained during protests against the “partial mobilization” of reservists for the Ukraine invasion in 2022.
