The House voted unanimously on Wednesday to establish a task force to investigate the security failures surrounding the June 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The vote, 416-0, reflects bipartisan outrage over the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped harm, one rallygoer was killed, and two others were severely injured.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., emphasized the bipartisan nature of the task force, saying, “Protecting the safety and security of our nation’s leaders is a responsibility that transcends party lines.” The 13-member task force will include seven Republicans and six Democrats, tasked with identifying security lapses and recommending preventive measures. The task force, which has the authority to issue subpoenas, will deliver a final report by December 13.

The bill was sponsored by Republican Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler, who was present at the rally with his family. Kelly expressed his community’s grief and shock, stating, “The people of Butler and the people of the United States deserve answers.” He viewed the task force as an opportunity to restore public trust in bipartisan problem-solving.

Three House committee hearings have already been held on the shooting. Following intense scrutiny from both parties, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday. She had called the incident the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades but failed to provide specific answers during her congressional testimony.

Democrats, including Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., supported the task force, emphasizing the need for accountability and preventive measures. “We need to know what happened. We need to get to the truth. We need to prevent this from ever, ever happening again,” McGovern stated.
