House Republicans have renamed $1,000 baby savings accounts in their new tax bill from “MAGA Accounts” to “Trump Accounts,” a last-minute change added to their sweeping “One, Big Beautiful Bill.” The accounts would grant $1,000 to every American baby born starting in 2026.
Originally standing for “Money Account for Growth and Advancement,” the MAGA label was replaced in an 11th-hour amendment, reflecting growing legislative efforts to honor President Trump. Past GOP proposals have included placing Trump on the $100 bill, renaming Dulles Airport after him, and allowing a third presidential term.
The change drew sharp criticism from Democrats during a House Rules Committee hearing. Rep. Joe Neguse said Republicans would “scream bloody murder” if accounts were named after Barack Obama. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon sarcastically suggested calling them “Trump Diaper Savings” or “TDS.”
